Living the “3 Simple Rules”

Learning to live the Methodist “General Rules”

The Experiment

Bob in Wesley\'s PulpitI am a United Methodist pastor serving Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, TX. During July, 2008, I am preaching a series inspired by Bishop Rueben P. Job’s book, Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living. Bishop Job has updated and applied the Wesleyan “General Rules” for our time. He describes those 3 simple rules as: 1) do no harm, 2) do good, and 3) stay in love with God.

I have decided that while I’m doing this series, I’m going to do an experiment. I’m going to try to live by the 3 simple rules and blog about where that takes me. I’m not a spring chicken at age 54. You would think I’d have this Wesleyan living down by now! But I suspect it will be more challenging than it appears at first glance.

Personally, I have been married to my wife Susan for nearly 30 years. We have three wonderful grown children of whom I am very proud.

By the way, that’s me standing in John Wesley’s pulpit from The Foundry in London. Maybe it will inspire me…

I enjoyed your service on Sunday and reading your blog today. (By the way, it’s the first blog I’ve ever read. You inspired me.) Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. As a working wife and mother, I really enjoyed your article today.

    Thanks,
    Jacqueline
